I am making slow but steady progress on my interview transcript. If you read the prior postings about this, you know that I am dealing with technological issues. The issue is not so much with sound quality of the co-researcher - it is quiet but audible, and I am having no more of an issue in understanding than I have had with typical recordings. The biggest problem for me is that I picked up a lot of other noise - including at one point the start up of the furnace blower. I have briefly (very briefly) considered requesting a re-do with my co-researcher, but for several reasons I have decided not to do that. First, I have pretty good written notes to help me (in fact, the noise of me writing is another one of the annoying extra sounds). Secondly, I have transcribed hours and hours of tape and actually have gotten fairly adept at producing a basic transcript. I know, however, that in the real world, I am going to have to deal at some point in my life with less than ideal recording conditions and less than ideal recordings. Therefore, this is a great and safe setting for me to spend the extra time and effort to work with this. And, third, I plan to put together a little movie that demonstrates some of the sound manipulation that I can do with the free program Audacity and post that movie to this journal/blog. I am not going to use this actual research recording because I did not ask for consent from my co-reseacher for something like this (nor did I want to ). At this point, I am 2/3 of the way through the transcription but there are more empty spots than I would normally have. Another complication I am dealing with is my teaching schedule for this semester - I have two large classes and both are essentially new preps. Next week would be a great catch up week for me (spring break) ut
