I am currently working on a metasummary of published qualitative research with a new research team. I have used the CASP in the past but in this instance I have recommended we use a version of the TQR article rubric, available here.
One thing that sticks out in my mind as I read research, especially when I am looking at purpose, rationale, etc. is that a very wise instructor once said: "just because something has not been researched, it does not mean it should be researched." But a surprising number of authors, including me - although not recently, I think - present the fact that there is a "gap" as the primary reason to do research. But I think while having a gap might be somewhat "necessary" it is hardly ever likely to be "sufficient."
