Probably the essence of qualitative data analysis is pattern matching. (I know that sentence is out of whack but sometimes things are done for effect rather than stylistic precision.)
The more analysis I do, the more I find myself not so much rushing to fit things together as I find myself comparing something to a type, or in the case that inspired this post, a person I've met before. I am in the midst of a professional exchange and I found myself today wondering: "what does this remind me of?" and I realized that the behavior demonstrated by the other person was very similar to that of someone I used to work with not quite 20 years ago.
