I am anticipating some of the issues or complications that may (probably will) arise as I work on my doctoral dissertation. As I mentioned in an earlier post, it is, in my mind a 'monster' project. So I have assembled a group of 7 diverse 'monsters.' I am assigning each monster a component of my dissertation in which complications might occur. These monsters were sneaky and were much harder to identify when separated from the others in the group. I did manage, with some difficulty, to get individual pictures, and will introduce each of them as time goes on and problems occur. I have created some new goals so I would like to finish this project. The 'art work' is meant to represent a piece of pie - the final piece, of course. I used Sketchbook Express and a Wacom Bamboo tablet with stylus (an older model I purchased used on Ebay) to create this. I still don't quite have the hang of drawing with the stylus and do an average job of sketching under the best of conditions. For this last work with the transcript segment, I am going to switch gears away from the CA/Jeffersonian approach and use a more creative technique. Update on my dissertation project:
-No response from human resources regarding recruitment of university staff -Meeting with contractor representatives revealed: -Most staff only work during academic year - therefore beginning earlier than late August is not possible -Shift change is mid afternoon (2-3 p.m.) - therefore a.m. and p.m. exercise times are not feasible -Would need shower facilities to make this attractive; contractor staff do not have access to recreation facilities Also, I finally checked out my inside alternative for activity on Sunday. I prefer outside activity/exercise but have had to respond to a lot of pressure regarding the heat in this area. This said, it has been the coldest spring I can recall and my prior experiences working at the pool suggest that we get maybe 4-6 weeks of very hot weather in mid summer. Based on my 3-4 years here, it rarely stays hot much after the beginning of the semester. I ended the pool season twice in very cool (not comfortable to get wet) weather. Still, the general sense is that it is very, very hot. Unfortunately, my initial impression of the inside alternative is not good. The surface is not particularly good for walking and definitely not good for jogging. It is probably harder than most of what we would encounter outdoors (other than sidewalk), so I think that it would not be good based on repetitive motion/overuse concerns. These are the latest 'curve balls' in my proposed project. The longer I think about it, the lack of decent outside exercise facilities on/near campus is a real disappointment. My prior university (Southern Mississippi) had multiple choices - one outside on campus, another across the street, and the inside track (which would require facility membership) was far superior to the one at my present university - smooth, had marked lanes, rubber surface, lots of windows and no leaking roof (when it rains the one here is a real challenge). I tend to have the impression that health/recreation are very low priorities at this campus based on investment in facilities. I guess I should amend that statement - spectator sports are very popular as recreation; participation is what is less popular. This is finals week at my home university and the week before summer trimester begins at Nova (my second home? my home away from home?).
I have a moderately large pile of papers to grade during the next several days. This week is actually better than most prior finals weeks for me - I gave my exams Monday and Tuesday, while, in the past, my exams were often scheduled on Friday - with grades due in the following Monday. I have about half of each exam graded and around 4 days to finish. There is not really any progress to report on my dissertation work but a couple of things are in the works this week. I should have some updates on that project no later than next week, and, hopefully, have regular updates after that. I do plan to post another 'monster' post soone. I have some other monsters that are going to play a role in my dissertation updates. I hope to clean up a couple of other projects during the next month (by 'clean up,' I mean finish papers and send them where they need to go) but am just getting started on another new thing during this time when one term is not quite finished but the next has not quite yet begun; the title of this post refers to this in between time. This project has to do with disability and inspiration. |
