One of the important considerations for this interview assignment is what technology to use. This is a distance interview, so technology is going to be necessary. One of the alternatives is to use the 'practice Elluminite classroom' in the Blackboard online learning program. Pluses include that it has its own recording capability and is familiar and accessible to the students in the class. Negatives I see have to do with sound - there is feedback at times, or echo, and I have noticed from the beginning that every so often the sound 'cuts out' briefly - for maybe a second or less. I do not know if that is captured on the recordings; I only ever missed one live session so I am not in the regular habit of listening to the tapes. The other thing about the classroom is that.....well, it is a classroom. That is what I think of when I see that screen. If I have that response, what response will my co-researcher have? How will it impact the interview? Will it make us feel more as if we are 'on display?' I actually prefer the telephone and have conducted many hours worth of telephone interviews, followed by many, many more hours worth of transcription from taped telephone interviews. I am, if anything, used to the way that voices sound on the telephone and I honestly believe that I can hear beyond the words. It may not be quite as clear as a in person interview - I have about 5 of those - but I thought that each of the in person interviews was, in its own way, a product of the physical environment and I never found exactly the right one. It was often convenient to do interviews in peoples' offices but I think that the comfort of the office really allows someone to retreat in a way and also creates that sense of 'work' the way the Elluminite says 'classroom.' I used my office a couple of times but I felt like it put people slightly ill at ease - I think there is a sense of being in the principal's office or a teacher's office. I do not like the idea of coffee shops because my experience having meetings in coffee shops is that I feel like people are trying to listen. Whether that is the case or not, it is not the right place for an interview in my opinion. I think that somewhere outdoors would be ideal but that is not a possibility for a long distance interview and it is often problematic for a local interview (too hot, too cold, too many insects, etc.)
On the other hand, I think the telephone provides a nice bridge between intimacy and privacy. You can be wearing your underwear, or nothing. No one much is stuck to a cord anymore (do they even sell those phones?) so you can move around in a way you cannot during an in person interview. I know that some people talk about missing the non-verbals when you use a phone, but I have to wonder if those non-verbals are necessarily accurate. When you go into someone's home or office, they may be concerned about creating a certain image, and dress a certain (less comfortable) way, move things around, clean, or do other things that make their usually comfortable surroundings feel more alien. This must sometimes impact mannerisms and other behavior. Think about the mother who has told her kids to keep the noise down - she is going to tense up every time she hears something and may be half listening (so only half listening to the interviewer) the entire time. Skype is another alternative that provides some ability to capture certain dimensions of non-verbal communications. I did one job interview via Skype and I can say that I spent a fair amount of time setting up what they would see behind me (all of the books that make me look smart!). Many people would be concerned about their appearance before using Skype. Again, I worry that those kinds of considerations create a stressful environment even before anything gets started. There will be more discussion between my co-researcher and myself about this and I need to honor that person's wishes as well as considering my own preferences.
