One of my favorite characters in Dickens's work has been Mr. Micawber from David Copperfield. Toward meeting my still-in-progress goal of reading all of Dickens's novels, I read "David Copperfield" and "The Old Curiosity Shop" over this most recent Xmas break. Mr. Micawber is a character that David encounters when he is very young. Authors and Dickens experts have alleged that he is based on Dickens's father, who, like Micawber, had some struggles with business and personal finances. Presumably Dickens's father was also happy and very likeable. I particularly like Micawber because of his habit of communicating his innermost thoughts more comfortably in writing than in person. Throughout the novel, Mr. Micawber contacts David (who is also known as "Trot" or "Trotwood") or Traddles with lengthy letters, that tend to describe doom or predict impending doom (of a financial sort).
